Barcelona has a busy May calendar of cultural events, with museums, film festivals, concerts, markets, and immersive experiences taking place across the city, according to Barcelona Secreta.
One of the main attractions is an immersive exhibition at Espacio Inmersa, which uses 600,000 biodegradable balloons to create cartoon-style scenes. The experience moves from the deep sea to outer space and from ancient civilisations to modern cities, with photo opportunities, penguins, and a large ball pit.
Catalan.News news coverage continues to track major city events, while May also brings practical options for people planning time away from Barcelona. Yescapa is offering campervan rentals for trips to the Costa Brava or the Catalan Pyrenees before the summer rush.
In the museum and immersive category, the Night of the Museums returns with free entry at many museums in Barcelona and nearby cities including Badalona, Cornellà, and L'Hospitalet. Visitors can see permanent and temporary exhibitions, join guided tours, watch theatrical performances, and take part in children's workshops. LUMINISCENCE at the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi ends on 17 May, with video mapping, projections, classical music, and some sessions with a live choir.
Music and film also feature strongly. Candlelight concerts run throughout the month with tributes to Mecano, Coldplay, Metallica, Ludovico, Mozart, Beethoven, and the Outlander series. Docs Barcelona opens with Mehrad Oskouei's A Fox Under a Pink Moon, with Germany as guest country and a tribute to producer and distributor Heino Deckert. The city also hosts Món Llibre for children, Mecal Factory at c/ Llull, 105 and Jardins del Museu Can Framis, and an anime cycle at the Filmo with titles including Space Battleship Yamato: The Movie, Metropolis, The Boy and the Beast, and Memories.
Food, photography, and neighbourhood events round out the month. Barcelona will host workshops, esmorzars de forquilla, live music, and a barbecue area for market produce, while ten local establishments have received a 2026 Solete Repsol, including Bar Bocata and La Bodegueta de Cal Pep. Art Photo BCN takes place at Disseny Hub Barcelona, Croiss&Fest brings bakeries, workshops, and a market, and a three-day event dedicated to physical music formats will include new releases, oldies, concerts, and meet-and-greets. Poblenou will also hold an open day with 12 hours of free programming, and other immersive shows include The Jury Experience, Sensas at Avda. Diagonal, 617, and the Cursa de El Corte Inglés, which runs from Maria Cristina to Plaça Catalunya.
