Commercial associations across Barcelona are holding street activities and special events this weekend to celebrate European Local Commerce Day, which officially falls on 9 May. The initiative aims to reinforce the connection between neighbourhood shops and residents, inviting people to rediscover commercial streets as places for life, strolling, and meeting.

Participating establishments will move their operations onto the streets, showcasing products, offering promotions, and sharing activities in a festive atmosphere designed for all ages. Saturday will be the main day of celebrations, with several simultaneous events across different districts.

Weekend Events Across Barcelona

In Sarrià, the Eix Sarrià association is organising the Spring Commerce and Gastronomy Fair on Carrer Major de Sarrià, between Carrer Pare Miquel i Planes and Carrer Mestre Nicolau, as well as in Plaça de la Vila. This event will run from 10am to 8pm, combining commercial offerings, gastronomy, and a neighbourhood atmosphere. Meanwhile, in Sant Andreu, Carrer Gran de Sant Andreu will host the Commerce Festival, with activities between Carrer Malats and Carrer Fabra i Puig, in addition to Carrer de l'Ajuntament and Rambla Fabra i Puig. This day-long event will run from 9:30am to 8:30pm, featuring local businesses and activities for all ages.

Encants Nous will also host a commerce, gastronomy, and craft fair on Carrer Dos de Maig, between Carrer Mallorca and Carrer Aragó, from 10am to 8pm. This space will combine commercial stalls with culinary and artisan proposals. On Sunday, the Eix Comercial del Raval will join the celebration with an event in Plaça de Salvador Seguí. The programme starts from 12pm to 2pm with a popular vermouth and children's activities, continues from 2pm to 4pm with a community paella, and concludes with a DJ session from 4:30pm to 9pm, transforming the square into a festive meeting point for the neighbourhood.

Beyond these main events, other commercial areas such as Poblenou, Barnavasi (Sant Gervasi), and La Marina will also participate. They will do so from their own shops, using visual elements, merchandise, posters, and small gifts to highlight the campaign and encourage customer involvement.

Barcelona's Role as European Capital of Local Commerce

This year's celebration holds special significance as Barcelona has been designated the European Capital of Local Commerce 2026. This distinction recognises the city's commercial model, which is based on proximity, diversity, and the integration of commerce into neighbourhood life. In this context, European Local Commerce Day is one of the first activities linked to this capital status, which aims to show the value of Barcelona's commercial fabric and its role as an economic and social driver.

Concurrently, the city is also hosting the 1st Local Commerce Fair, organised by the Barcelona City Council's Directorate of Commerce, Restaurants, and Food. This fair is taking place from today until Sunday in Plaça de les Glòries.
