Barcelona commuters will face a six-week closure on the L1 metro line this summer, with services suspended between Florida and Plaça de Sants from 17 July to 28 August. The disruption affects around 40,000 daily passengers in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, according to Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).
TMB says a replacement bus service will cover all closed stations during the works. For people travelling between L'Hospitalet and Barcelona, alternative rail options include the L9 at Torrassa, the L5 at Plaça de Sants, Rodalies from Rambla Just Oliveras to Sants, and FGC from Avinguda Carrilet to Plaça Espanya.
The closure is needed for a full renovation of the track between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou. TMB says the project, budgeted at €11.5 million, will replace the tracks, catenaries and signalling equipment, as well as the switch that gives access to the workshop and allows trains to be diverted.
The affected section is one of the few open-air parts of the Barcelona metro system and includes a steep gradient. The work is part of wider summer maintenance across the network, with further interruptions planned on the L9 and L10 Nord lines.
On those lines, service between Sagrera and Onze de Setembre will be interrupted from 25 June to 30 August. For the final phase, from 31 August to 6 September, the closure will extend to Bon Pastor, which will stop L9 Nord users from changing to the L5 at La Sagrera.
Other works will also affect station transfers. Verdaguer station will close from 6 July to 30 August, with L4 trains passing through without stopping while accessibility works continue. The link corridor between the L4 and L5 at Verdaguer has been closed since October last year and is due to reopen when services resume on 31 August. The corridor between the L1 and L3 at Catalunya will also close from 6 July to 7 September for renovation and asbestos removal, meaning passengers will need to transfer above ground.
