Barcelona is offering a wide array of family-friendly activities, including immersive exhibitions, interactive museums, and cultural experiences, designed to entertain and educate children and adults alike.
Among the new attractions is 'Balloon Story', an immersive exhibition at Espacio Inmersa in Poblenou, which opened on 21 May. It features nearly 600,000 biodegradable balloons arranged in real-scale scenes, depicting environments such as an underwater world, outer space, and a jungle. The exhibition also includes a ball pit for all ages, according to Barcelona Secreta.
Another notable experience is 'LUMINISCENCE' at the baroque basilica of Santa Maria del Pi. This event combines classical music with video mapping, offering a relaxing and artistic format suitable for calmer children. However, this experience closes on 17 May, with tickets selling quickly.
Historical Journeys and Sensory Adventures
Families can also step back in time with 'The Last Days of Pompeii', an immersive exhibition that brings ancient history to life. Recognised by National Geographic in 2024, it features historical objects, exact replicas, 360-degree projections, metaverse elements, and virtual reality. This educational and entertaining proposal engages visitors with sight, sound, smell, and even wind sensations, allowing children to explore the 'Pink City' on a magic carpet.
For those who enjoy challenging perception, the Paradox Museum at Centro Comercial Arenas offers 70 interactive spaces filled with optical illusions and sensory deceptions. It provides a fun and educational experience, ideal for creating memorable family photos. IKONO, another digital art installation, introduces children to interactive light and colour displays, from ball pits to 'light painting' booths and arcade machines.
SENSAS, located on Calle Entença, challenges all five senses through tasks performed in complete darkness. Participants navigate laser obstacles, identify smells, and recognise sounds, enhancing their other senses. Completed challenges result in donations to the local association AURA, which supports people with functional diversity.
Science, Nature, and Performing Arts
The CLIK space at CosmoCaixa has been renovated to offer interactive educational experiences for children aged 3 to 11, allowing them to explore scientific concepts through play. Animal lovers can visit the Barcelona Zoo, one of Europe's largest, home to over 5,500 animals from 400 different species across 32 hectares.
La Puntual theatre specialises in puppet, marionette, and shadow puppet shows, presenting classic stories and original works every weekend. For panoramic views of the city and port, the Montjuïc Cable Car offers a 750-metre journey with an 85-metre elevation gain, providing easy access to the Mirador de l’Alcalde and Montjuïc Castle. The cable car is adapted for people with reduced mobility.
Cultural and Culinary Delights
The FilmoXica children's film series, running from January to March, aims to introduce children to quality cinema. It organises cycles of films from various cultures and eras, often linked to calendar traditions, alongside workshops, presentations, and concerts. This helps young audiences understand cinema's artistic side.
The Fabra Observatory, one of the world's oldest active observatories, focuses on asteroids and comets. It offers guided tours of its museum and dome every weekend, allowing families to observe celestial bodies through its telescope. The Chocolate Museum promotes the culture and tradition of chocolate through games, workshops, and factory tours, with programmes for children aged 3 to 16 and adults.
For a traditional treat, many of Barcelona's chocolaterías offer hot chocolate and churros, a popular cold-weather tradition. Additionally, Jungle Tag provides an active experience with challenges in a jungle-themed environment, including climbing ropes, mirror mazes, giant ball rooms, and obstacle courses where electronic wristbands track points by touching illuminated LEDs. The Auditori L’illa also hosts LED dance shows, featuring illuminated costumes and performances of stories like 'Sleeping Beauty' or 'Cinderella', depending on the date.
