The Provincial Court of Barcelona has ordered the reopening of an investigation into an intentional fire at a mosque in Piera, Barcelona, which occurred in the early hours of 12 July 2025.
The court's decision partially upholds an appeal filed by the Piera-Masjid Arrahmnan Islamic Community, represented by lawyer Benet Salellas, against the case's previous dismissal by the Igualada Court of Instance. No one was inside the mosque at the time of the fire, and no personal injuries were reported.
However, the building, which was due to open within weeks, suffered severe damage. The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, will now request mobile phone operators to provide a list of devices connected near the mosque during the time of the incident.
Police to Request Phone Data
The fire started around 3.30am on a Saturday. Piera Local Police received an alert about a fire at the mosque, located on the Bedorc road. Mossos d'Esquadra and the Generalitat Fire Department were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found flames at one of the entrances to the worship centre. They could not stop the fire from spreading throughout the rest of the building, according to reports.
Following the incident, several Muslim federations in Catalonia issued a joint statement. They claimed the fire aimed to "fracture the coexistence and social cohesion of the municipality." They added that such acts sought to "break social peace and harm the spirit of understanding that has always characterised the town of Piera."
This new order from the Barcelona court means the investigation will continue, with a focus on gathering digital evidence to identify those responsible for the intentional fire.
