Barcelona has named Suara Cooperativa and Eurecat to lead the innovation and entrepreneurship strand of its new care economy hub, according to Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Activa. The hub is part of the city’s care policy work and is aimed at improving care services and jobs in Barcelona.

The practical detail for residents, care workers and organisations is that the hub is at Carrer Almogàvers 165, Barcelona. It covers 5,417 square metres across six floors, and the council says it will have three activity lines. That makes it a local point of contact for care-sector training, innovation and business support.

Who is involved

According to Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Activa is the municipal agency that is promoting the hub, while the training side is already being led by the Hospital del Mar FP Sanitaria Institute. The council says the project is part of Barcelona towards the Right to Care 2025-2030, a municipal measure intended to guarantee the right to receive and provide care in dignified conditions.

Suara Cooperativa says it has a multidisciplinary team of more than 5,800 professionals and manages more than 300 services and facilities. Eurecat says it is a European technology centre with 850 professionals working on areas including health and well-being, digital transformation and environmental quality. Both organisations are being brought in to support the hub’s innovation and entrepreneurship work.

What the council says the hub will do

Raquel Gil, Barcelona City Council’s fifth deputy mayor and president of Barcelona Activa, said the project is speeding up and is necessary because of its value for the care sector. She said the aim is to professionalise the sector and improve conditions for both people receiving care and those providing it. Bárbara Outeiro of Suara Cooperativa said the project will help advance the transformation of the care sector through social innovation, technology and shared knowledge.

Felip Miralles, Eurecat’s director of Health Technologies, said technological innovation is key to meeting the current and future challenges of the care economy. The council also says the hub sits within Barcelona’s network of economic hubs, which it uses to support strategic sectors, attract talent and encourage new economic activity. What readers should do next

For now, the main next step is to follow Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Activa for the hub’s programme, opening details and participation routes. Care organisations, workers and businesses interested in the sector should watch for calls, training offers and innovation activities linked to the Almogàvers site.
