Barcelona drivers heading for Baix Empordà and the Costa Brava should expect heavy traffic over the Whit Monday holiday weekend, according to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT). The agency says around 600,000 vehicles are set to leave the Barcelona metropolitan area.
The forecast points to delays on the main roads linking the metropolitan area with coastal destinations in Girona province. Motorists travelling to second homes or short-break destinations in Baix Empordà should allow extra time and check conditions before setting off.
Whit Monday, known in Catalonia as Segona Pasqua, is a public holiday that often creates an extended weekend and a sharp rise in road traffic. The SCT says this is one of the periods when mobility pressure is highest on routes out of Barcelona.
Traffic management measures are typically used during long holiday weekends to help keep vehicles moving and improve safety. These can include extra police presence, lane changes and speed restrictions on busy roads.
