Authorities in Baix Camp are searching for an arsonist following seven fires across three municipalities on Thursday evening. The blazes, which occurred in Vilanova d'Escornalbou, Pratdip, and Colldejou, are believed to be intentional, according to the Diari de Tarragona. Remains of a device were found at one location where a fire did not fully ignite.
Mossos d'Esquadra officials confirmed that an investigation is open. The fires posed a significant danger, particularly near forested areas, prompting a large response from emergency services.
The first alert came at 18:11, reporting three separate fires near the road leading to the Escornalbou castle-monastery in Vilanova d'Escornalbou. These fires affected scrubland close to dense forest. The Generalitat Fire Service deployed eight ground units to control the situation, bringing the blazes under control by 19:16.
Shortly after, at 20:07, three more fires were reported in the Palma Negra ravine in Pratdip. Four fire service units attended these incidents. The final alert was received at 21:10 for a fire in Coll de Guix, Colldejou, which two fire service units extinguished.
Investigation Underway
On Friday, Mossos d'Esquadra and rural agents, assisted by dogs trained to detect accelerants, combed the affected areas for evidence. Investigators believe the person responsible has extensive knowledge of the local terrain, as many ignition points were not near accessible roads. It is also suspected that an off-road vehicle or motorcycle may have been used to reach these remote spots.
The investigation continues as authorities work to identify and apprehend the individual behind these deliberate acts. The focus remains on gathering forensic evidence and witness accounts to build a case against the perpetrator.
