In Girona, the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) says the 80 km/h speed limit on the AP-7 around the city has helped reduce accidents. The comparison is with the peak recorded in 2022, the year after tolls were lifted on the motorway.
Ramon Lamiel, director of the SCT, confirmed on Monday that the measure will continue as long as the data shows an improvement in road safety. He said the limit is reviewed every year with the Spanish Ministry of Transport.
The restriction was introduced after traffic volumes rose on the AP-7 once tolls were removed. Officials say the lower speed helps manage traffic flow and reduce the risk of collisions, especially near exits around Girona.
The SCT says the annual review is meant to keep the measure aligned with changing traffic conditions. Any future changes would be made with the Ministry, according to Lamiel.
