Record Participation in Annual Cultural Event
The 54th edition of the Concurs Nacional de Vestits de Paper d'Amposta will take place on Thursday 13 August at 10:30 PM at the former parking area of the municipal pools. Nearly 40 paper garments will be showcased across four categories: Moda Actual (Contemporary Fashion), Vestit d'Època (Historical Costume), Vestit de Fantasia (Fantasy Wear), and Infantil, for models aged 12 and under. This year’s contest sees the addition of three new dressmakers, a development celebrated by Amposta’s Festivals Councillor Anna Tomàs as a sign of generational renewal. "We have more participants than ever before and more dressmakers than in previous years. It’s an important indicator that confirms generational change," she said, noting the intensive craftsmanship involved. All entries must be original creations made entirely of paper, either hand or machine crafted. The use of glue is prohibited in the main construction of the garments, though it is allowed for accessories such as hats, crowns, fans, or jewellery.
Jury, Prizes and Cultural Recognition
A panel of experts will judge the designs based on cut and construction, artisanal work, originality, overall appearance, footwear, and accessories. During the evening, each design will be presented with details about its creation, materials used, designer, and model. After the parade, the jury will deliberate while singer Beth performs live. The event doubles as both a fashion showcase and cultural performance. Winners in each of the four main categories will see their dresses become property of the Ajuntament d'Amposta. The municipality is working with designers to establish a future exhibition space where these pieces can be preserved and viewed by the public. An additional award, the Premi Jove Revelació (Young Revelation Prize), worth €400, is reserved for emerging designers under 30 who present innovative work in the Contemporary, Fantasy, or Historical categories.
"The paper dresses must comply with a very specific regulation and rulebook," said Councillor Tomàs, highlighting the strict artistic standards.
Step Toward UNESCO Heritage Status
In March 2025, Amposta’s full council unanimously declared the paper dresses a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local (BCIL, Asset of Local Cultural Interest). This designation, confirmed in the official record of the 31 March 2025 plenary session, marks the first formal step toward seeking recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. According to Culture Councillor Inés Martí, this process is being pursued jointly with Mollerussa and Foz do Douro-Porto. Once classified as BCIL, the next stage involves submitting a dossier to the Generalitat de Catalunya to initiate proceedings with UNESCO. The contest continues to strengthen its role as a cornerstone of Amposta’s cultural identity, blending artistry, tradition, and community engagement.
