The town of Amposta has completed its Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD), marking the conclusion with the formal handover of the renovated Cases del Castell. The project, funded partly by €2 million from the EU’s Next Generation funds via the Spanish government and the Generalitat de Catalunya, represents a total municipal investment of €3 million.
Mayor Adam Tomàs confirmed the milestone during a visit to the site on Thursday, stating:
“In 2022 we took on the challenge of transforming Amposta’s tourism with a long-term vision. Today we can say that project is a reality.”
He added that the achievement reflects effective collaboration between administrative levels.
The PSTD was one of the first such plans approved in Spain under the national tourism recovery scheme. Alongside the Cases del Castell, it has delivered the electric riverboat La Perla, improvements to cycling routes including the Via Verda Val de Zafán, upgrades to the Stone Bridge and Canal promenade, new electric vehicle charging points, and digital heritage tools.
Historic site transformed into tourist hub
The restored Cases del Castell, late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings adjacent to the medieval castle site, will house Amposta’s new Tourist Office, a riverside restaurant with terrace, and facilities for cycle tourism. During construction, significant archaeological remains were uncovered, including walls, a tower, a monumental gate linked to the old dock, and a building believed to be a storage warehouse used by medieval hospitallers to collect tributes.
Architect Carles Brull, who led the project, explained that the design integrated these findings without compromising original goals.
“We started with nearly abandoned buildings and then discovered major medieval remains. The challenge was restoring the historic houses while incorporating this cultural heritage, and we’ve done so.”
Transparent flooring sections have been installed to allow visitors to view the excavated structures. Original features such as hydraulic tile floors were also preserved and restored.
