Five schools in Alt Empordà are taking part in a project on the region’s maritime roots, with the work centred on local history and identity in Girona province.
The schools are Mossèn Josep Ma Albert in Cistella, Les Curculles in Palau de Santa Eulàlia, Tramuntana in Pont de Molins, Modesta Pous in Vilanant, and the school in Garrigàs. Together, they are working on the Origen project, which looks at the area’s connection to the sea.
Maria Antònia Barceló, director of ZER Empordà, said the project follows last year’s Refugis work. She said that after asking whether the towns were refuges, the group felt the need to look more broadly at the region itself.
The project is designed to help pupils understand how the Mediterranean has shaped the culture, economy and identity of their communities. It also aims to show that learning about the past can help students understand their place in the present. For more local reporting, see our news page.
ZER Empordà brings together small rural schools so they can share resources and run joint educational projects. The schools expect the work to include research and local visits, with the findings shared within the school communities and, potentially, with the wider public.
