Top Journalism Honours Awarded in Girona
The Mosques de la Informació 2026 ceremony took place on Wednesday 14 October at the Centre Cultural La Mercè in Girona, celebrating outstanding contributions to journalism and cultural life in the region. The auditorium was filled to capacity, with no seats left and many attendees standing. Francesc Sánchez Carcassés, known professionally as Xicu, was awarded the Mosca Grossa, the highest distinction of the evening. A journalist and artistic director of the F'Estiu festival in Calonge and Sant Antoni, he received the award amid a standing ovation. The award recognises his long-standing impact on Catalan cultural journalism. David Torras, director of Communication at Girona FC, received the Mosca Borda for the second consecutive year, marking the first time in the history of the awards that an individual or entity has achieved this. Despite the recognition, no representative from the football club attended the ceremony. A pre-submitted letter, described as critical of the Mosques de la Informació, was read aloud in case of a win.
Special Tributes and Musical Moment
Sílvia Pérez Cruz, the Palafolls-born singer and composer, was honoured with the Mosca de Sant Narcís. The tribute was delivered by Xicu Sánchez Carcassés, accompanied on stage by Pérez Cruz’s mother, Glòria Cruz. The moment culminated in an a cappella rendition by Pérez Cruz of a verse from Corrandes d’exili, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere. The Mosca del Col·legi was awarded to two journalists: Víctor Gay and Angels Bronsoms. Jordi Bosch delivered a lively tribute to Gay’s career, while a written homage to Bronsoms was read by Rosa Gil. The event also paid tribute to Gaditos Farjas Montoya, a former voice of Ràdio Olot who died in July, and to Pep Collelldemont, a founding member of the Girona press association who passed away in late 2025.
Recognition of Press Freedom and Language
The ceremony opened with remarks from Susanna Quintana, vice-president of the Girona branch of the Col·legi de Periodistes, who noted that 15 new members had joined the demarcation this year. She stressed that transparency and responsibility are non-negotiable in journalism. Girona mayor Lluc Salellas spoke in support of press professionals, highlighting the challenges of job insecurity and calling for dignified wages to sustain democratic journalism. He also underscored the importance of the Catalan language in public discourse. The evening included a surprise and humorous speech by artist Pia Crozet, who designed this year’s awards. President Jordi Grau of the Girona press association delivered a satirical review of local affairs before presenting the awards, blending irony with a strong defence of ethical journalism.
