Violant Cervera, the Junts spokesperson in Lleida City Council, has announced her candidacy to lead the local council in the 2027 municipal elections. Ms Cervera, a former Social Rights minister and former member of the Catalan parliament, is seeking the position for the first time. Her candidacy requires ratification by party members on Thursday, according to a party statement.
Cervera's Political Background
In 2023, Ms Cervera was second on the Junts list led by Toni Postius. Mr Postius resigned his seat after poor election results, which saw the party lose a councillor following a period sharing government with ERC. Since then, as Junts spokesperson, Ms Cervera has occasionally supported the minority Socialist government of Fèlix Larrosa. Junts negotiated the 2025 budget with the PSC, but voted against the 2026 accounts.
Ms Cervera believes Lleida needs "leadership that looks after the city's day-to-day life". She also wants "a city with self-esteem, proud of what it is and with the ambition to aspire, without complexes, to be a reference in the country". The candidate advocates for restoring civility, respect, and coexistence in neighbourhoods, alongside strengthening security and ensuring public spaces are "cared for and shared". She stated: "Coexistence is not built only with speeches. It is built by respecting the city, its people, and what unites us as a community."
Vision for Lleida's Future
Ms Cervera highlights Lleida's unique character as a city where "urban and rural realities coexist naturally". She points to elements she considers central to the municipality's identity, such as the Seu Vella, the Segre river, the agricultural plain, popular culture, local commerce, and the defence of the Catalan language and identity.
Regarding her vision for the city, Ms Cervera proposes a Lleida that is "more human, cohesive, and prosperous", capable of creating opportunities, quality employment, and shared progress. She supports retaining talent, attracting leading companies, and promoting strategic projects like Torreblanca and Quatre Pilans. These initiatives, she says, would "position Lleida as an innovative and sustainable economic hub."
