Around 150 teachers gathered outside the Sagrada Família in Barcelona on Monday, 18 May, using desks and chairs to create an "open classroom" to protest for improved working conditions and salaries. The demonstration forced the closure of the basilica to visitors, with refunds issued for tickets.
The teachers, many wearing yellow t-shirts and blowing whistles, voiced slogans against the Catalan government's education policy and Education Minister Esther Niubó. Their demands include addressing overcrowded classrooms, the failure of inclusive education, a lack of investment, and stagnant salaries, according to the Ustec·Stes union.
Mossos d'Esquadra officers were present at the scene, monitoring the situation. The basilica's management stated it would resume its usual visiting schedule only once the situation stabilised and the safety of staff and visitors could be guaranteed.
Fifth Day of Strike Action
This protest marked the fifth day of strike action by education professionals. Monday's strike involved teachers from the Consorci d'Educació and the Barcelonès region. Municipal workers and teachers have formed a joint front against the administration, organising a series of mass demonstrations across Barcelona to push for their labour demands.
