Teachers in Catalonia blocked several major roads on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, as part of a region-wide education strike. Demonstrators chanted slogans against government officials and urged others to join the industrial action.
The first road closure occurred just before 7am on the B-20 in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, near exit 19, affecting both directions. Soon after, the same road was blocked in Mundet. A group of around 100 teachers also closed Gran Via in the Can Batlló area.
Around 7:20am, another group of educators blocked the C-32 in Mataró, heading towards Barcelona. Additionally, a slow march of teachers caused disruption on the C-55 towards Barcelona, and the C-17 was closed in Malla.
Protests Target Government Officials
Protesters chanted slogans targeting Esther Niubó, the Minister of Education, and Núria Parlon, the Minister of Interior. Their calls for a full strike echoed across the various protest sites, highlighting widespread discontent among teaching professionals. The protests aimed to draw attention to their demands and pressure the government for changes in education policy.
Further updates are expected as the strike continues throughout the day, potentially impacting more routes and public services across Catalonia.
