Lleida was at the centre of a teachers' strike on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, when hundreds of teachers, professors and students blocked the C-12 and A-2 motorways as part of a Catalonia-wide protest.
More than 500 people began a demonstration at 9.30am from the Official Language School (EOI) and marched along the C-12 towards the Alba Schools. Participants carried water, hats and umbrellas to cope with the heat while pressing their demands.
The protest also disrupted traffic on the A-2 motorway between Lleida and Torre-serona. The action formed part of a second day of strikes across Catalonia. For wider coverage of local and regional developments, see our news page.
Unions including USTEC, CGT, Professors de Secundària and Intersindical said the mobilisation has pushed the Department of Education into dialogue. They added that the proposals made so far are not enough.
The unions say they are still seeking better conditions and more resources, which they argue are needed for quality education. Negotiations are continuing, but no resolution has been reached.
We will update this report as the talks progress and more details become available.
