A large, colourful tassel canopy, named "Entre fils i colors" (Between Threads and Colours), has been inaugurated in Tàrrega, Lleida, as part of the Sant Jordi celebration. The collaborative art piece, made from 6,000 tassels and 20,000 metres of wool, was officially opened recently.
More than 200 people and six local organisations dedicated over 3,000 hours to creating the canopy. These groups included Associació Alba, Associació Alzheimer Tàrrega, Associació contra el Càncer, Dones Arrel, Casal Cívic i Comunitari, and Residència Sant Antoni. The initiative originated from the Tàrrega City Council's Economic Promotion area.
Tàrrega Mayor Rosa Maria Perelló praised the project, noting it built on a crochet canopy started last year by the previous government. She acknowledged that such a large-scale project "is not prepared in the 30 days we have been in government," according to Segre. Perelló also thanked the participating organisations, highlighting that beyond its decorative appeal, the canopy "will serve to offer shade zones for the summer heat."
Community Effort Brings Colour and Shade
The canopy is installed at the junction of Carrer del Carme and Carrer de Santa Anna, in the area known as Plaça del Laberint, and extends into sections of these streets. This permanent installation aims to revitalise the city's commercial centre.
It also seeks to create new shaded areas, providing relief from high summer temperatures. The project represents a significant community effort to enhance public spaces and support local commerce in Tàrrega.
