Tàrrega's local council has expressed its full support for the Alfons Costafreda secondary school's decision to withdraw from a pilot programme that would place plainclothes Mossos d'Esquadra officers in educational centres.
Emili Gilabert, the Education Councillor for Junts, stated that the council could "do no more than respect a decision taken sovereignly by the institute; in fact, we applaud it." Gilabert criticised the measure as "totally improvised, without consensus, and one that has caused much rejection." He added that the council is "against this imposition, especially when educational centres perceive it as an invasion within their educational projects."
Mayor Clarifies Stance
Mayor Rosa Maria Perelló, also from Junts, rectified her earlier statements which had been favourable to the controversial plan. She attributed her initial comments to a misunderstanding. Perelló explained, "I thought journalists had asked me about the educational governance model pilot programme, for which we had recently signed an agreement."
The pilot programme, which aims to introduce undercover police into schools, has been met with widespread disapproval from educational institutions and local authorities in Tàrrega. The council's backing of the Alfons Costafreda school highlights the growing opposition to the initiative across the region.
