A court in Tarragona has ordered an insurance company to compensate the family of Francisco Pérez Benítez, a corporal from Tarragona who died in April 2021 at the age of 35. The court said his death was caused by a cerebral thrombosis, a very rare complication associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The ruling comes after a five-year legal process over a death that affected the Spanish Army and drew attention during the height of the pandemic. The court found in favour of Pérez Benítez’s family and recognised the link between the vaccine and his death.

Francisco Pérez Benítez developed the fatal thrombosis after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine. His case was one of several that prompted public discussion and medical review of possible side effects, although severe complications were officially classed as extremely uncommon.

The judgement gives the family a legal conclusion after years of pursuing the case. The specific details of the insurance policy and the compensation amount have not been made public.
