Tarragona has recorded 14 road deaths so far in 2026, after three people died in traffic accidents on the province’s roads in May, according to the Servei Català de Trànsit. That is down from 17 deaths in the same period last year.

The most serious incident happened on 8 May on the N-240 near Montblanc, where a head-on collision killed two drivers. One was a 50-year-old Italian citizen living in El Pont d’Armentera, and the other was a 27-year-old from L’Espluga de Francolí, who was known for his involvement with local community groups.

The third death in May was a 49-year-old Romanian motorcyclist. He died after falling into a canal following an accident on the TV-3451 road in Deltebre, in the Baix Ebre area. May was a quieter month than April on Tarragona’s roads, when six people died.

Across Catalonia, Trànsit reported 52 deaths from 49 fatal accidents on interurban roads by 31 May. That is 16.1% fewer than in the same period of 2025, when 62 people died in 58 incidents. Compared with 2019, the benchmark year for road safety targets, there were 17 fewer deaths, a fall of 24.6%.

The agency also said 283 people suffered serious injuries in the first five months of the year, down 7.5% from 306 in the same period last year. Even so, May was the deadliest month of 2026 in Catalonia, with 19 fatalities.

Motorcyclists remain the most affected group. Of the 52 people who died in Catalonia this year, 21 were motorcyclists, the same number as in 2025. Eight pedestrians and three cyclists also died. Vulnerable road users account for 32 of the 52 deaths recorded up to May, nearly two-thirds of the total.

Trànsit said most deaths happened during leisure travel. Of the 52 fatalities recorded up to May, 28 occurred on weekends, public holiday eves, or during special traffic operations. By age group, people aged 45 to 54 recorded the highest number of deaths, with ten victims. There were also 15 deaths among people under 34.

By province, Barcelona recorded 25 road deaths, Tarragona 14, Girona seven and Lleida six. More Catalonia news
