Tarragona province is preparing to be one of the world's premier locations, and the best in Catalonia, for observing a total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. This exceptional astronomical event, which has not occurred under these specific conditions for 120 years, will not be repeated in the region this century. Around 20:30, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, causing a sudden darkness that resembles an accelerated sunset. For a few unique moments, observers will have the chance to see the solar corona, the Sun's outer atmosphere, which is typically hidden by the bright solar disk and only becomes visible during a total eclipse. The rarity of this total solar eclipse makes it a significant occasion. The last time such a phenomenon was visible in the region was 120 years ago, and according to the Diari de Tarragona, it will not be seen again with these favourable conditions throughout the rest of the century. ## Optimal Viewing Conditions While the eclipse will be visible across the entire province, the intensity and duration of the phenomenon will vary depending on the observer's location. Areas further south, such as Alcanar and Amposta, are expected to offer extended viewing times and clearer visibility. Crucially, locations with an unobstructed horizon towards the west will provide much better conditions, as the eclipse will occur close to sunset. Conversely, viewing may be limited in urban environments or areas surrounded by tall buildings. The Catalan government has officially designated Tarragona province as hosting 18 of the 20 municipalities across Catalonia recommended for experiencing the eclipse under the best possible conditions. These include well-known towns such as Tarragona, Reus, Valls, Cambrils, Salou, and Amposta, among others. The Department of Research and Universities selected these sites based on scientific criteria, considering factors like the eclipse's duration, which will be approximately 55 seconds in its totality, the Sun's visibility on the horizon, and the capacity of these locations to accommodate a large public. ## Public Observation Points To facilitate public viewing, 27 dedicated observation points will be established across the province. These specially prepared spaces, situated outside urban centres, aim to ensure both optimal visibility and safety for spectators. Collectively, these sites will have the capacity to host more than 85,000 people and provide parking for 40,000 vehicles. This total solar eclipse is not only a visual spectacle but also represents a scientific and tourist opportunity for Tarragona without precedent. The combination of its geographical location and the specific conditions of the phenomenon positions the province as a preferred destination for astronomers, curious onlookers, and visitors from around the world.
