Tarragona has cleared a long-stalled housing project on Carretera de Valls, after the city council and InmoCaixa reached an agreement to move forward with Pla Parcial 1. The site lies between Avinguda de Catalunya and the A-7 motorway, and could deliver around 300 new homes.
The project had been held up because of important archaeological remains on the land. According to Nacho García, the councillor for Territory, the revised plan keeps those remains in their original location. Earlier ideas to move them were ruled out because of their significance.
The agreement also opens the door to improvements at a key entrance into Tarragona, including the urban stretch of the N-240 road. City officials say the plan addresses both housing needs and the appearance of the area.
Pla Parcial 1 has faced delays for a long time, mainly because of the heritage issue. The new arrangement between Tarragona City Council and InmoCaixa is intended to balance development with preservation, and to let the project move towards the next planning stage.
