Torredembarra hosted the first meeting between the Tarragona Provincial Council and mayors from the Baix Gaià region on Thursday, 28 May 2026. The aim is to draw up an integrated territorial strategy for the area, with joint work and a common roadmap.
Rubén Viñuales, First Vice-President of the Tarragona Provincial Council, attended the meeting. He was joined by deputies Jordi Molinera and Vale Pino, along with municipal representatives from Altafulla, Creixell, El Catllar, La Pobla de Montornès, Roda de Berà, Salomó, Tarragona, Torredembarra and Vespella de Gaià.
Viñuales said the Baix Gaià is “a territorial reality of more than 55,000 people that deserves a common and joint strategy that opens new opportunities beyond its limits, also at a European level.” Vale Pino and Jordi Molinera also backed the need for a shared strategy, pointing to existing joint projects in tourism and sport.
The meeting focused on building a shared vision between municipalities. That work is meant to support intermunicipal cooperation and respond to challenges linked to socio-economic development, territorial cohesion, sustainability and better public services. The Baix Gaià was presented as a Functional Urban Area (AUF), with the strategy offering a way for the region to act together and strengthen its voice within the wider Camp de Tarragona area.
The Provincial Council said the initiative reflects its support for municipalities in strategic planning and for projects that promote balanced development across the territory. The Baix Gaià includes twelve municipalities and around 55,000 residents, with different local models but similar needs. The next step is to define specific actions and a timetable for the agreed strategy. For more local coverage, see our news page.
