Tarragona will build floating offshore wind turbines for the Gulf of Roses project on the Costa Brava, according to officials. The work is linked to the planned Balears Quay at the Port of Tarragona.
The Port Authority of Tarragona expects to start work on the new quay shortly. The project has received a €24 million grant from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving, known as IDAE, which is part of the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
The Balears Quay expansion is a key part of Tarragona's role in offshore wind energy production. The new infrastructure is intended to provide the facilities needed to assemble and dispatch the large components used in floating wind farms.
The project fits into Catalonia's wider plan to increase renewable energy capacity. The Gulf of Roses scheme is one step in the region's use of marine resources for clean power generation.
