A new botanical guide for Tarragona, "Guia Botànica de Tarragona", has been published by Raül Font-Quer and Maria Font-Quer, aiming to help residents recognise local plant species and their therapeutic benefits.

The book, illustrated by Jana Lalueza and published by Ed. Silva, reviews 25 species of trees, shrubs, and herbs, including carob, rosemary, fennel, and thyme. Its publication addresses the concept of "plant blindness", a term coined by American botanists to describe the urban population's tendency to overlook the variety and uses of plant life.

According to the Diari de Tarragona, the authors, who come from a family with five generations of pharmacists, highlight the therapeutic advantages of these plants. Their work continues a family legacy of botanical expertise, honouring the contributions of Pius Font i Quer, considered the finest Spanish botanist of the 20th century.

Reviving Botanical Awareness

Pius Font i Quer, the grandfather of Raül Font-Quer and great-granddaughter of Maria Font-Quer, actively challenged the ignorance of the natural environment a century ago. The new guide serves as a modern continuation of his dedication to botanical education and appreciation.

By offering a practical resource for identifying local flora, the "Guia Botànica de Tarragona" encourages greater engagement with the natural world, promoting a deeper understanding of Catalonia's rich biodiversity and its potential benefits for well-being.
