Tarragona province will see 35 of its beaches flying the prestigious Blue Flag this summer, according to the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac). This international quality mark, which assesses water quality, accessibility, and safety, means the province has one fewer Blue Flag than in 2025.

Two beaches in the province, Coma-Ruga in El Vendrell and Calafató in L'Ametlla de Mar, lost their Blue Flag status this year. However, L'Esquirol beach in Cambrils regained its distinction, resulting in a net loss of one flag for the region.

Spain Leads Global Blue Flag Ranking

Spain continues to lead the world in Blue Flag awards, with 677 beaches recognised across the country. This figure represents an increase of 35 flags compared to last year and is the highest number since the environmental initiative began in 1987. Catalonia alone accounts for 101 of these flags, while the Valencian Community maintains its regional lead with 151 awards.

Some popular Tarragona coastal municipalities, such as Salou, did not receive any Blue Flag distinctions. Salou's town council had previously stated in 2025 that they had not applied for the quality seal. Other well-known beaches, including Playa Llarga and Cala Fonda (Waikiki), also did not achieve Blue Flag status.
