Unanimous vote for safer access

The Ajuntament de la Seu d’Urgell has committed to upgrading the lighting at Parc Olímpic del Segre, following a unanimous vote at its latest plenary session. The move responds to growing concerns over safety on footpaths connecting the park’s access bridge to the restaurant terrace. A motion filed by Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) called for a review of the pedestrian route and necessary improvements where deficiencies were found. All political groups, including Junts per la Seu and CUP, supported the proposal.

Even if there’s no restaurant service, this area should be lit. It’s pitch black and people have reported not seeing where they’re stepping.

Marian Lamolla, ERC spokesperson in La Seu, highlighted that users regularly walk the path after dark during summer evenings. "Marches a les nou de la nit que ja és fosc i no és un espai segur perquè està molt fosc i no veus ni on trepitges a terra," she said.

Upgrades tied to canoeing world championships

The lighting improvements form part of a wider €3.26 million investment ahead of the upcoming Canoe Sprint World Championships, co-hosted by La Seu and Sort at the park’s facilities. Works already underway include resurfacing raised paving stones, installing inclusive automatic doors, renovating restrooms, and building a new elevator to the bar terrace. Joan Barrera, mayor of La Seu d’Urgell, confirmed that enhanced illumination is among the planned actions: "una de les actuacions que es farà és la millora de l’enllumenat." Jordi Fàbrega, spokesperson for Junts, noted the issue had become more apparent since the return of the catering service, which now stays open two hours later. He described the current darkness as unacceptable given the high-level sporting events hosted at the venue. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution when using the path at night until the upgrades are completed.
