Hundreds of people gathered in Salou on 18 April 2026 for the inauguration of the restored machine gun nests at Punta del Porroig viewpoint. Good weather contributed to a well-attended event, according to Salou officials.

The gathering included representatives from the army, Rovira i Virgili University, neighbourhood groups, local associations, councillors, and residents. The day combined official ceremonies, such as the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and ribbon-cutting, with educational outreach. A guided tour allowed around 150 attendees to enter the bunker and learn about its history.

Unique Coastal Fortifications

The restoration project, which received a grant from the Tarragona Provincial Council, highlights a unique site among Catalonia's coastal fortifications. Of approximately 130 machine gun nests still preserved, the one at Punta del Porroig stands out for its architectural design, officials said.

This double nest features an unusual circular structure and a system of internal galleries connecting several rooms, including two that served as ammunition storage. This configuration makes it a construction with few equivalents along the Catalan coast.

Connecting Past and Present

During the event, Salou's mayor, Pere Granados, explained that the restoration transforms a previously closed space into a living element of historical memory. He said it helps explain the past and makes it understandable for new generations. Granados emphasised the municipality's commitment to preserving heritage as an educational tool and a cultural and tourist resource.

The mayor noted Salou's strategic position on the Camp de Tarragona coast has historically made it a key point for surveillance and defence. This history ranges from pirate incursions to coastal fortification during the Civil War, which included the construction of machine gun nests, batteries, and trenches.

Respectful Restoration and Future Access

The restoration work respected the original structure, applying criteria for heritage conservation, safety, and landscape integration. The aim was not only to preserve the space but also to reinterpret it for public understanding. The project involved municipal technical services, the Tourism Board, the Culture department, and various specialists, alongside support from the Tarragona Provincial Council. The local council is also working with the army to incorporate original period elements to complete the historical recreation.

Following the inauguration, guided tours were offered, an experience that will be repeated regularly. These tours will be organised on the third week of each month, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays, and will be available in both Catalan and Spanish. Salou is taking another step in recovering and sharing its heritage, integrating history, landscape, and identity into a single narrative open to the public, with the goal of recovering historical memory.
