Salou City Council has unveiled plans for the Eix Cívic project, a major urban transformation initiative in Salou that includes the construction of 117 protected homes and new public spaces. This development follows final planning approval from the Generalitat and aims to redefine the city centre with more green areas, facilities, and a clear commitment to accessible housing.
Mayor Pere Granados presented the details of this initiative, describing it as one of the most significant urban operations for Salou's future. According to Granados, the project is designed to enhance residents' quality of life, providing spaces for coexistence, socialisation, and cultural activity. A central element of the plan is the construction of 144 homes, of which 117 will be officially protected housing. This commitment seeks to facilitate access to housing for groups such as young people, families, and the elderly, particularly in a context of increasing difficulty in finding affordable flats.
New Public Facilities and Urban Connection
Beyond housing, the Eix Cívic is conceived as a new focal point for the municipality. The project incorporates the creation of a large public square and the addition of various facilities. These include a new library, an interpretation centre dedicated to local history featuring immersive experiences, and dedicated spaces for businesses and entrepreneurs. These additions are expected to generate significant social and economic activity within the area.
The development will also play a key role in improving mobility and urban cohesion. It is designed to connect different zones of Salou, from the seafront to inland areas, by establishing a substantial green and leisure axis for the community. This connection aims to create a more integrated and pedestrian-friendly urban environment.
Project Timeline and Future Coordination
Regarding the timeline, the Eix Cívic project is currently in the processing phase and awaiting tendering. This means definitive dates for its completion cannot yet be specified, according to Salou City Council. However, the council is working with the expectation that the development will progress in parallel with the future Camp de Tarragona tram line. The objective is to ensure both projects are coordinated, optimising their combined impact on the region's infrastructure and urban landscape.
