A series of early morning fires in Barcelona's Sagrada Família neighbourhood destroyed 14 cars and a motorbike on Tuesday. Police are investigating whether the fires, which also damaged a refuse container and a building facade, were deliberately started.
The incidents occurred shortly after 4:30am, waking residents with a loud bang, according to one neighbour who spoke to betevé. The witness described seeing a car burning near their home and a large smoke cloud from another location simultaneously.
Firefighters quickly responded to extinguish the flames. The affected vehicles were parked on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, Carrer d'Indústria, and at the intersections of Sardenya with Còrsega, and Còrsega with Sicília. No injuries were reported.
Police Investigate Arson Link
Mossos d'Esquadra and Guàrdia Urbana are investigating the cause of the fires. The rapid succession of multiple blazes suggests a possible arsonist, officials said. The damaged vehicles remained in place on Tuesday morning, with police cordoning off the affected areas. This allowed experts to assess the damage and locate vehicle owners.
The investigation continues, with authorities working to identify the person responsible for the extensive damage.
