Roses town council has started work to clear the west moat of the town’s Citadel, with the aim of improving the visibility of the historic walls. The project is taking place in Roses, in the Alt Empordà, and focuses on the area around the Porta de Terra, or Land Gate.
The work costs €326,458 and forms part of a wider plan to recover and enhance the town’s historical heritage, according to officials. The council says the project will remove vegetation and sediments that have built up over many years in the moat.
By clearing the area, the walls should be fully exposed and easier to see and appreciate. The council also expects the work to support the safety and conservation of the Citadel structure, including reducing the risk of damp and landslides.
A new perimeter path is also planned. It will allow visitors to walk around the moat and view the walls from different angles. The work is expected to take about six months to complete.
