Roses, in Girona, has expanded its affective and sexual education programme for teenagers in local secondary schools. The initiative, part of the Salut Jove Roses project, focuses on healthy relationships, sexuality, emotional management, respect, boundaries and responsible decision-making.

This year, nine sessions were held across three institutes, Illa de Rodes, Cap Norfeu and Centre Escolar Empordà. Four sessions took place at Cap Norfeu and Illa de Rodes, and five at Centre Escolar Empordà. A new approach this year separated groups by gender, with officials saying this helped create a more trusting setting and encouraged open participation.

The sessions were led by Mireia Cuenca, a teacher and specialist in affective and sexual education. She used a participatory method and adapted the content to the different ages and realities of the young people involved.

Roses Youth Councillor Ester Navas said it is important that young people have safe spaces where they can speak naturally about sexuality, emotions and relationships. She also said the gender-separated format was intended to help more adolescents feel comfortable taking part and sharing concerns.

Navas said the Youth Department will continue promoting young people’s health in the municipality through preventive and educational actions. The wider news coverage on Catalan News includes local public service updates across Catalonia, while the Salut Jove Roses programme continues to support physical, emotional and social wellbeing through workshops, talks, participatory activities and educational resources.
