A 53-year-old worker has died in Roquetes, in Baix Ebre, after a serious industrial accident at a local company. The incident happened during repairs to a hydraulic mechanical lift, when the man became trapped under a large metal structure, according to Catalan police.

Mossos d'Esquadra officers from the Tortosa station received the alert at 7.40am on Saturday, after reports of an injured worker. Police said the accident caused extremely severe injuries.

Emergency crews attended the scene, including four Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, two Generalitat Fire Brigade units, and medical teams from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques, known as SEM. They provided initial care and evacuated the worker.

The man was taken to Verge de la Cinta Hospital in Tortosa, where he later died despite the efforts of medical staff. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, and the Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the circumstances.

This is the sixth publicly recorded fatal workplace accident in Tarragona province in 2026. Provisional figures for the year show three deaths in Montsià, one in Priorat, one in Baix Ebre, and one in Baix Penedès.

By sector, four of those fatal incidents were in industry and maintenance, one in agriculture, and one in road and infrastructure conservation. The Roquetes case is included in the industry and maintenance category.
