Residents in Ribera d'Ebre have formed a new citizen platform to encourage public debate about the potential construction of an artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactory in Móra la Nova.

The platform, called 'No a la Gigafactoria de Móra la Nova' (No to the Móra la Nova Gigafactory), is raising concerns about the project's high resource consumption and its projected low job creation.

"We saw it was a need for the territory and a service to create a platform and inform people of all the consequences a gigafactory like the one they want to install has," a platform representative said. They added that public social services, particularly healthcare and education, are already strained in the Terres de l'Ebre region.

Public Services Under Strain

The representative highlighted that the millions of euros planned for the gigafactory could instead address many existing problems in the Terres de l'Ebre. The platform aims to ensure residents are fully aware of the project's potential impact before any decisions are finalised.

The group plans to hold public meetings and distribute information to explain the environmental and social implications of such a large-scale industrial development. They are advocating for a thorough assessment of the project's long-term effects on the local community and infrastructure.
