The Ribera d'Ebre region is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Third Carlist War, acknowledging the historical figure of Josep Agramunt i Llecha, known as the "Capellà de Flix" (Priest of Flix). Agramunt i Llecha was one of the most prominent figures of the conflict in Catalonia, according to Diari Catalunya.

His role in the war was significant, with historical records noting the impact of his actions. The rectory in Flix became a centre for Carlist leaders. "The rectory of Flix has decidedly become a hotbed of evangelical ringleaders. After the so-called 'Priest of Flix', famous for his misdeeds, the parish priest who came to replace him in that town has also rebelled," a historical account states.

Remembering a Local Figure

The Third Carlist War, which took place from 1872 to 1876, was a civil conflict in Spain. It involved Carlist supporters, who backed the claim of Carlos VII to the Spanish throne, against the liberal government. Catalonia, particularly areas like Ribera d'Ebre, saw considerable fighting and political upheaval during this period.

The commemoration serves to reflect on the historical events and their lasting effects on the region and its people. Local historians and community groups are organising events to educate residents about this important chapter in Catalan history.
