La Baronia de Rialb and Tiurana, in Lleida, will open Catalonia's longest zip line this summer. The 960-metre attraction will cross the Rialb reservoir and is expected to create six direct jobs, according to the Segre newspaper.
The installation is awaiting final administrative procedures. It forms part of an inland nautical station project, driven by the Segre-Rialb Consortium, to boost the local economy.
Zip Line Details and Experience
The zip line features a drop of nearly 200 metres, with the ride taking place about 30 metres above the reservoir. Users could reach speeds exceeding 130 km/h during the descent. The starting point is in Vilaplana, at approximately 550 metres altitude, near the Roca Carbonera viewpoint.
The arrival point is on the opposite side, passing over the Nautical Activities Centre. Access will also be possible from the Tiurana jetty, where an electric catamaran will transport users to the nautical centre area.
Investment and Local Impact
The project represents an investment of €200,000, funded by the Provincial Council through a demographic challenge aid programme. Agustí Jiménez, vice-president of the council, said that initiatives like this generate "activity and opportunities".
Mayors from both municipalities highlighted the project's importance for retaining residents. Genís Villarte, mayor of Tiurana, recalled that the construction of the reservoir reduced opportunities, especially for young people, and believes this new infrastructure can help reverse that trend. Antoni Reig, mayor of La Baronia, explained that the zip line complements the nautical activities centre and the electric catamaran connecting the two towns.
The zip line is expected to operate on weekends throughout the year and daily during holiday periods.
