The Catalan government plans to continue operating a truck parking facility in the centre of Reus beyond 2027, despite decades of opposition from local residents. This decision comes as the current concession for the site is set to expire.
Sources from the Department of Territori told Diari de Tarragona that the Generalitat "works with the hypothesis of continuing to operate in this location while we do not have an alternative location." The parking area, situated between Avinguda de Sant Bernat Calvó and Carrer Pintor Fuster, has become fully integrated into the urban fabric as the city has grown around it.
Residents Demand Relocation
The Generalitat's intention directly conflicts with long-standing demands from residents in the surrounding area. For decades, the community has called for the facility to be moved outside the urban core, citing concerns over noise, air pollution, increased traffic, and safety in a residential neighbourhood. The continuous presence of heavy goods vehicles in such a central spot has been a persistent point of contention.
The current concession for the truck parking facility is due to end in 2027. However, the Catalan government's statement indicates a practical challenge in identifying and securing a suitable alternative site for such an essential service. Finding a new location that meets operational needs while addressing environmental and community concerns is a complex task for urban planners.
The issue will likely remain a significant point of discussion between local authorities and the community in Reus. As the 2027 deadline approaches, residents will continue to press for the relocation of the facility, while the Generalitat tries to balance urban development with the practical requirements of transport infrastructure.
