Reus is at the centre of a murder investigation after a third suspect was remanded in custody in Tarragona over the death of a man in a farmhouse in the city. The 33-year-old man was arrested in the Barcelona metropolitan area after fleeing the scene, then appeared before the Reus duty court.
The court ordered provisional detention without bail on murder charges. He faces the same charges as the two other people arrested in connection with the case. For ongoing local coverage, see our news page.
The investigation is being led by the Mossos d'Esquadra Criminal Investigation Division, and remains under secrecy. Police believe the crime may have started from a dispute over the occupancy and payment of the property where the events took place.
According to the current line of inquiry, one of the arrested people may have asked others to help intimidate the victim and force him out of the farmhouse. Officers are also examining whether the property was linked to irregular assignments or informal subletting.
Emergency services were called to what was first reported as a fight at around 2pm on 16 May. When officers arrived at the Reus farmhouse, they found the body of a man with clear signs of violence. The scene showed evidence of torture, and pepper spray inside the property initially made it harder for responders to act.
Investigators say the victim had been tied hand and foot and had tried to defend himself during the attack, possibly using a knife. Two men, aged 46 and 79, were arrested at the property after trying to flee police, and both were later remanded in custody. One had facial injuries consistent with a fight, while the other had stab wounds and was treated at Hospital Sant Joan de Reus.
The Mossos had been searching for the third suspect since the start of the case. Police now say the main circle of those involved is considered closed, although the inquiry continues to establish the exact role of each person. It is the first recorded murder in Reus in 2026, and the fifth crime in the city over the past three years.
