Reus leaders advance health and social care pact

Joint health and social strategy confirmed

The Minister of Health, Olga Pané, and Reus mayor Sandra Guaita held a meeting at Reus Town Hall on Friday 18 September 2026 to review key health projects and reinforce collaboration between the city council and the Generalitat. The meeting, lasting about an hour and a half, marked progress toward a formal Health Pact aimed at deepening integration across healthcare, social services and community initiatives. Pané praised the two years of cooperation between the administrations and highlighted the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus as "one of Catalonia's crown jewels", noting its significant impact and potential. She stressed that while hospitals play a vital role, most health responses must be delivered locally, especially in the context of an ageing population.

2028 timeline confirmed for new Carme health centre

The future Centre d'Atenció Primària (CAP) in the Carme neighbourhood remains on track for an operational launch in 2028, with both Pané and Guaita confirming the timeline. The project is linked to broader urban regeneration plans approved by the Generalitat and Reus City Council, requiring coordinated development of healthcare infrastructure and housing.

The Health Minister confirmed that the Generalitat and the city council are "aligned" on the CAP Carme initiative, which includes not only medical services but also urban planning. The council approved the final urban planning changes to improve accessibility, public spaces and protected housing in the area.

Integrated health model to expand across Catalonia

Pané linked Reus's experience to the Catalan Government's wider push for Integrated Health Areas, saying the city's model "fits perfectly" with the new policy framework. She added that Reus had informed the design of the broader strategy. The planned Social and Health Agency and the Agency for Public Health, both expected to be finalised by the end of 2026, will create new governance structures to support this integrated approach. Local initiatives such as Reus Integra, which coordinates municipal, ICS, hospital and university services, are seen as key examples of effective cross-sector collaboration. Guaita emphasized the growing closeness between the city council and the Department of Health, describing the future Health Pact as the framework for ongoing joint action. She noted that Reus Integra already interacts well with regional community health and social rights programmes.
