Market Opening Delayed to Autumn 2027
The PSC of Igualada has criticised the Junts-led municipal government for a fresh postponement of the Mercat de la Masuca's inauguration, which is now scheduled for autumn 2027. The announcement follows repeated delays since the initial 2015 promise by Mayor Marc Castells, with subsequent target dates set for 2024 and November 2026. According to the PSC, nearly half of the 20 stall licences for the new market remain unassigned. Additionally, no company has yet come forward to manage the planned supermarket inside the facility.
Opposition Cites Chronic Project Delays
Jordi Cuadras, the PSC's head of opposition at the town council, expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of unfulfilled commitments after 16 years of Junts governance. He stated that the administration has failed to deliver on major city projects including the Passeig renovation, the Rec transformation, the auditorium, Emili Vallès sports complex, and 1,000 promised homes.

Cuadras attributed the delays not to chance but to a systemic inability by Junts to launch and manage key urban developments. He contrasted this with what he called the government's efficiency in pursuing unnecessary projects, citing the roundabouts at Les Comes, a €150,000 pergola in Parc de Valldaura, and €100,000 spent on lights and bunting in the town hall square.
Call for a Clear Vision
Councillor Montse Montaña added that the Masuca Market should become a reference point for fresh, local produce through both tradition and innovation. However, she lamented the lack of direction in the current administration, noting multiple project changes that have wasted public funds and broken promises on the timeline three times over. The criticism comes amid broader scrutiny of municipal spending, with Poble Actiu accusing Castells of launching a pre-election phase of image-driven expenditures.
