Sabrina Martínez Fernández de Piñar, a councillor for the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) at the Figueres Town Council, has formally resigned her seat effective Wednesday 30 September 2026. She cited personal and family reasons for the decision, stating it was "necessary at this time" despite being difficult.

In a public letter, Martínez emphasized that her departure from the council does not mark a withdrawal from the PSC or municipal politics. She affirmed her continued commitment to the socialist project and to the city of Figueres, leaving open the possibility of standing again in future local elections if the party so decides.
She expressed gratitude for her time in office, calling it an "honour and privilege" to represent citizens, contribute ideas, and work for the city. Martínez also thanked her PSC colleagues for their trust and support throughout her tenure.
PSC Leadership and Succession
Martínez was elected as the fourth candidate on the PSC list during the May 2023 municipal elections, behind Pere Casellas, Núria Navarro, and Alfons Martínez. The fifth candidate on the list was Dídac Capel Domínguez, who is next in line to take her seat under standard municipal succession rules.
The vacancy will be filled according to the electoral roll submitted to the Junta Electoral de Zona de Figueres, which confirms the order of candidates and substitutes for the PSC-CP list.
Context Amid Broader Political Shifts
This resignation follows other recent political changes in Figueres. Mayor Marta Felip previously announced her own resignation, scheduled for formal acceptance at a full council meeting on Monday 5 November 2026, with a new mayoral election set for Thursday 8 November.
Meanwhile, the council continues rolling out major civic initiatives, including the new waste collection service launching across the city starting 5 October 2026, involving over 1,000 new bins and a fleet of modern vehicles.
