The Vatican will officially announce the full itinerary for the Pope's Spanish trip, including his stop in Barcelona to bless the Sagrada Família's tallest tower, this Wednesday at 12pm. This announcement comes exactly one month before the expedition begins.
The Montjuïc event is described as "more than a concert" and a "popular gathering" open to all ages. The Archbishopric reportedly entrusted the Barcelona-based firm, known for festivals like Guitar BCN and the Barcelona Jazz Festival, with creating a unique experience. The Pope will deliver a message from a large stage positioned in the centre of the municipal venue.
Free Tickets and Diocesan Organisation
Those interested can request free tickets for the Montjuïc event via the Conelpapa.es website, which centralises information about the Pope's journey. Catalonia's ten dioceses have already received ticket allocations and are arranging bus transport for attendees. In contrast, attendance at the Sagrada Família ceremony will be by invitation only, with Barcelona parishes each receiving about five invitations to distribute among their faithful.
Communication strategies for the papal visit have differed significantly between Madrid and Barcelona. Public events and private meetings in the Spanish capital have been widely reported by media and influence circles, even involving ministerial press conferences. This openness reportedly displeased Rome, leading to some proposed events being cancelled. Barcelona, however, maintained a general silence until the Vatican's official announcement.
Details of the Barcelona and Montserrat visit will be revealed in Madrid, not Catalonia. Archbishop Joan Josep Omella will participate in a joint presentation at the Spanish Episcopal Conference headquarters, broadcast on YouTube. He will share the platform with the institution's president, Archbishop Luis Argüello of Valladolid; Archbishop José Cobo of Madrid; Bishop José Mazuelos of the Canary Islands; and Bishop Eloy Santiago of Tenerife.
Pope's Itinerary in Catalonia
The Pope's week-long trip to Spain includes three and a half days in Madrid. He will spend less than 48 hours in Barcelona, arriving midday on Tuesday, 9 June, and departing early on Thursday, 11 June. He will then travel to the Canary Islands to address the Mediterranean migration crisis, spending one day each in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
The Barcelona leg of the visit includes six main moments. These are his arrival at Barcelona-El Prat Airport on Tuesday, the large Montjuïc event that afternoon, a visit to Sant Agustí parish in El Raval the following day, and a midday meeting at Montserrat Abbey, involving helicopter travel. The afternoon will feature a large mass at Antoni Gaudí's temple, concluding with his departure from the airport on Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, the Pope will also bless charitable ambulances sent to Ukraine by Sor Lucía Caram's foundation. The Catalan nun, who was friends with Pope Francis, reportedly made this request directly to the Holy Father. The busy schedule for that day also includes a brief stop at the Cathedral, located directly opposite the Episcopal Palace, where he will stay overnight. Both Benedict XVI in 2010 and John Paul II in 1982 stayed there. Other locations, such as the Santa Anna field hospital or the Sant Roc neighbourhood of Badalona, were considered but ultimately ruled out due to security requirements or lack of time. Robert Francis Prevost, the current Pontiff, visited Sant Roc in 2017, eight years before his election.
