A pedestrian died on Wednesday, 29 April, in La Pobla de Mafumet, Tarragona, after being struck by a tanker lorry on the T-750 road, at kilometre point 1.8. The Servei Català de Trànsit confirmed the fatality.

The incident, reported at 5.15pm, involved a tanker lorry from inside the Polígon Químic. For reasons still under investigation, the lorry reportedly became uncontrolled, crashed through a perimeter fence, and hit the person on the public road. The victim died as a result of the impact.

The accident took place within the Tarragona Safety Chemical Park, a joint fire service that covers companies in Tarragona's petrochemical industrial estates. Four Mossos d’Esquadra patrols, one unit from the Bombers de la Generalitat, and several Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) units attended the scene, but could not save the victim's life.

Rising Road Fatalities in Tarragona

This marks the sixth road death in Tarragona province this April, making it a particularly bad month for road safety. The number of fatalities in the province has now surpassed the figures for the first two months of 2025, when five deaths were recorded on the road network.

This year, 31 people have died on Catalan roads, according to the Servei Català de Trànsit. The recent incident in La Pobla de Mafumet follows a worrying series of fatal accidents in the region.

For example, on 11 March, a 74-year-old man died in Marçà when a microbus left a track, fell down an embankment, and collided with a shed where he was working on his farm. The circumstances of that accident bear some resemblance to the latest incident.

Recent Fatal Incidents

The last few weeks have seen a concerning number of fatal incidents. On Monday, 27 April, a car driver died after a head-on collision with a motorhome on the N-340 in Roda de Berà. The day before, Sunday, 26 April, a motorcyclist died after leaving the C-43 road in Gandesa.

One of the month's most serious accidents occurred on Thursday, 23 April, when a cyclist was killed in Aiguamúrcia by a driver who fled the scene. The driver was later arrested by the Mossos at their home. Earlier in the month, on 17 April, a man riding an electric bicycle died after falling onto the TV-3025 road in l’Ametlla de Mar. On 8 April, a motorcyclist died on the N-340 in La Canonja after a car hit them from behind, failing to notice a red traffic light.
