Palamós, in Girona, will add marine-themed art to ten metal service covers in its Old Quarter as part of a project led by the town council’s Culture Department. The aim is to give these utility covers a more visible role in the streetscape and bring more colour to the area.
Local painters have been selected to take part, with each artist given a cover to work on freely around a sea theme. The council says the project is meant to reflect Palamós’ link to the sea, its fishing tradition and its coastal identity.
Once completed, the painted covers will be put back in their original places. The artworks are expected to be in place by early summer, ahead of the main tourist season.
Culture councillor Maria Garcia said the project is about connecting art with the city, bringing creativity into everyday spaces and valuing local talent. She also said it will help refresh the image of the Old Quarter.
The artists taking part are Anna Bosch, Joan Puig, Clara Soler, David Martí, Elena Vidal, Francesc Roca, Glòria Pons, Ignasi Grau, Laura Ferrer and Marc Ribas. Each will bring a different style to the marine theme.
