Teachers from the Osona and Lluçanès Education Assembly are holding a protest in Vic, Osona, today at 6pm against the integration of plainclothes Mossos d'Esquadra officers into local institutes. The demonstration is taking place outside the Institut de Vic on Carrer de Josep Maria Sert, followed by an educational assembly to discuss strike consultation results.
This protest addresses a recent controversy involving the Department of Education's pilot plan with the Mossos d'Esquadra. While the department presents it as a new model for school coexistence, it has met strong opposition from the educational community since its announcement.
Teachers argue that police presence will not improve school coexistence. They believe this responsibility lies with educational teams and professionals specialising in mediation and support. Furthermore, they complain about a lack of transparency from the Department of Education and school managements regarding the plan.
Opposition to Police in Schools
In Vic, the Department of Education plans to implement the pilot scheme in four centres: the three compulsory secondary education (ESO) institutes, Institut Jaume Callís, Institut la Plana, and Institut Comtat d'Osona, as well as the vocational training centre, Institut de Vic. However, educators are organising to try and stop the plan's implementation.
