Olot-born nutritionist Sergi Mateo has highlighted the role of diet in football through his work with Girona FC, where he spent nearly ten years. His career is a local example of how sports science can support elite results in Catalonia.

According to Diari de Girona, Mateo’s time at the club overlapped with Girona’s two promotions to La Liga, in the 2016-17 and 2021-22 seasons. He also contributed during the club’s qualification for the Champions League in the 2023-24 season.

Mateo has also written two books on football nutrition. His first, Se juega como se come (You Play How You Eat), is described as the first nutritional guide specifically for footballers.

His second book, Cocina que sales (Cook Your Way Out), offers practical cooking and nutrition advice for football players. Together, the books reflect the same focus that shaped his work at Girona FC, the link between diet and performance.
