An 80-year-old French diver died on Saturday near S'Encalladora island, off Cadaqués in the Cap de Creus area of Girona, according to emergency services.

The man was taking part in an immersion with another diver. At about 3.30pm, his diving partner alerted the crew of a nearby boat after he did not return to the surface.

Maritime Rescue, the Civil Guard, the Generalitat Firefighters and the Mossos d'Esquadra were mobilised. A search operation was launched in the area, which is within the Cap de Creus Natural Park.

His body was found submerged at a depth of about three metres at around 5.30pm. Agents from the Civil Guard's Underwater Activities Unit, known as the UAS, took charge of recovering the body.

Authorities have not released the diver's identity. An investigation into the exact cause of death is expected to follow, with initial reports suggesting a possible medical incident during the dive.
