Barcelona’s Canyelles neighbourhood now has a new public lift, with the Ajuntament de Barcelona saying the project is designed to improve accessibility in an area with steep streets and stairways.
The lift connects Carrer Federico García Lorca with Carrer Juan Ramón Jiménez, giving residents a direct route between the upper and lower parts of the neighbourhood. The city says this should make everyday travel easier for people moving through the area.
The council said the lift is especially useful for older residents, people with reduced mobility and families with pushchairs. It is intended to make routine tasks, such as shopping or reaching local services, more practical.
Canyelles is one of several Barcelona neighbourhoods where the terrain can make walking difficult. The city council says projects like this are part of a wider effort to make the city easier to move around and more inclusive for residents.
The lift is now operational. For more local coverage, see our news page.
