More than 200 parents, students and families gathered in Moià on Tuesday afternoon to protest against planned cuts to public education lines. The demonstration took place in Plaça del CAP and called on the Catalan government to keep current classroom group numbers at the Josep Orriols i Roca school and the Moianès institute.
The cuts were announced recently by the Department of Education, and local families say they are concerned about the impact on public education in the town. The protest was organised by the parents' associations, known as AFAs, of both public centres.
People at the protest painted banners and listened to a manifesto setting out their concerns. Organisers also handed out lemonade and coca, the traditional Catalan flatbread, as the gathering kept a community feel.
The families are asking the Generalitat to reconsider the reductions and keep the existing groups in place. They argue that this is needed to protect the quality of education in Moià.
The protest also reflects wider debate in Catalonia over how education resources are allocated in public schools and institutes. For more local coverage, see our news page.
